Dot Matrix Printers
We have tried to summarise, some of the most frequent FAQ's for Dot Matrix printers on these pages and will endeavour to keep the pages updated on a regular basis. If you would like to submit a query (which may well feature on these pages) support@avdcs.com.
We will endeavour to post more info in the near future.
A Go back to Windows v3.x but more seriously .......
Q. My Printer was working fine under Windows v3.x but I have recently upgraded my machine to Windows95 or NT. I have installed the Print driver supplied with the printer but it stops printing halfway through the test page.
A. It has recently been observed that the use of Bi-Directional (ECP/EPP) Parallel ports can cause problems with printers, particularly under Windows 95. This would appear to be related to the Internal cabling of the Computer and it is difficult to be more specific, some computers work, others seeminhly identical dont. AVD therefore recommends that at least for testing purposes the supposed ECP/EPP capability of your computer is turned off. This will probably involve you going into the BIOS set up, so dig out that old manual.
If you are using Windows 95 (WHY?) then the Parallel Port mode can be seen under the Hardware Manager settings.
Q. Will Windows v3.x Print Drivers work under Windows95
A. Ask Microsoft - According to the marketing blurb this is supposed to be a seamless upgrade but in reality....... The Print Driver supplied with your printer was probably for Windows v3.x or from the Microsoft Windows v3.x disks. Try using the SEIKO Precision Print Driver from the Windows95 CD-ROM (or disks). Should this still cause problems you should try to use one of your Printers Emulations. Most SEIKO Precision Printers support an Epson emulation and in many cases an IBM emulation as well. You could also try our Print Driver page.
Printers supported when using Windows v3.x
All SEIKOSHA Printers will work correctly under Windows v3.x using Printer Emulations. Typically these are for Epson and IBM models, to see a list of Printer Emulations go to the emulation page. Microsoft supplied SEIKOSHA specific print drivers with Windows v3.11. Unfortunately these are hidden from view and are on Disk7. To access them Click on "Install Unlisted or Updated Printer" and when prompted insert Disk 7 in Drive A: or Drive B: you will then see the following SEIKOSHA printers listed:
Other Printers are supported either via their Emulation or by SEIKOSHA specific drivers. For upto date information go to the Driver page.
At the time of writing Drivers are available there for the following printers:

Q. When using Fanfold paper the printer appears to print the first page, then throws 2 forms before resuming Printing
A. Who hasn't read the manual then ? If you look at your printer you will see a small lever protuding (normally on the right hand side) which shows a picture of Fanfold paper (normally at the front) and Single Sheet (normally at the back). This lever sets the printer into fanfold or Single Sheet mode. From the above our guess is that this lever is set to Single sheet and the printer is trying to find the end of the paper. Pull the lever to the front (Fanfold) position and the problem should go away. Q. My Printer (SP or SL-9X range) suddenly stops printing in the middle of a form and the P.OUT signal flashes
The SP range and the SL-9X range (incl SL-150) use a P.OUT sensor which measures the reflection of light to detect the end of paper. If you are using Pre-Printed forms it is likely that a Black area exceeding 0.5inches has been detected by the sensor. There are two ways to get round this problem.
a) Redesign your Pre-Printed forms to reposition the Black area away from the sensor.
b) If you have an SP printer you can disable the P.OUT sensor by sending down an ESC 8 command (only available in Epson mode). WARNING By disabling the P.OUT detection in this manner you run the risk of increased paper jams and damage to the Printhead if you allow printing direct on to the Platen. Cut Sheet Feeder Set Up using SL-90 Plus Windows Driver
Universal Printer Driver V.3.1.4
SL-90 Plus Driver V 1.0 1990-1992
In set up it is necessary to set PAPER SIZE as USER DEFINED
set size to A4 Width 2100 Length 2970
TOP MARGIN
The printer is incapable of printing on the TOP 0.38" of the document so to set a TOP Margin of 1" insert MARGIN SETTING of 0.62 this is 1 - 0.38
For a margin setting of 0.75" insert MARGIN SETTING of 0.37 this is 0.75 - 0.38
Setting the TOP MARGIN SETTING IN THE SOFTWARE TO ZERO will give a Top Margin of 0.38.
BOTTOM MARGIN SETTING
The printer cannot print on the bottom 0.3" of a document so it is necessary to
set bottom margin at 0.3 GREATER than the required Margin.
E.G. 1" will be set at 1.3. 2" set at 2.3
ON testing the bottom margin setting a minimum of 0.7" was found to function successfully.
LEFT and Right MARGINS appear to have no restrictions within reason.
To get the first print position on the Left hand side of the document Set the Left hand paper guide on the SHEETFEEDER on Ruler mark 0.8
On our help desk we get a multitude of questions and problems thrown at us. In general these are down to users not reading the manual and/or incorrect settings on their Printer or Computer. We have tried on our Emulation page to give advice on the best Print Driver to use, when a SEIKSOHA driver is unavailable. Hot Spots on the Emulation page will give some basic advice on Dip Switch settings and Self Test printing.

Q. Why are the Printer fonts not available in OS/2 Warp A. The OS/2 Print Drivers for Epson printers send all jobs down as Graphical Bit-Maps. (If any-one knows differently please let me know). This slows the machine down considerably. The best way we have found to use at least some of the printer fonts is to set the Printer to use its IBM emulation (if it has one) and then use the OS/2 IBM Print Driver. This enables at least the Courier Print Font, and will speed up text printing considerably. Unfortunately not all of our printers have an IBM emulation so printing will remain bit-mapped. The WINOS2 sessions can utilise normal Windows v3.x drivers and these include those on our Drivers page or those supplied with either OS/2 or Windows. |
